About us


MTI Residential Services, Inc. (formerly Multi-Talents, Inc.) was founded in 1993 along with a Board of mental health service consumers committed to filling a gap in community-based housing. During the 13-year history, MTI has grown from a small mental health housing provider to a comprehensive residential services provider, serving over 400 individuals and families, many of whom are the under-served and hard-to-serve populations. Ninety-five percent of MTI's tenant members are formerly homeless individuals.

MTI's visions is two-fold, first is to build more homes and create communities that provide hope and mutual support, nurture personal responsibility and respect, and empower individuals to gain control of his or her own destiny; and second, to develop new and innovative opportunities that embrace all aspects of life and builds on the individual's unique strengths and skills. MTI continues to be to providing supported housing to people with disabilities who have experienced homelessness. MTI's objective is to ensure tenant members have access to appropriate community resources and the highest quality supportive services to meet their needs and assist them in maintaining their housing and employment.

MTI is a private, minority administered, non-profit mental health housing development organization providing supportive services to single psychiatrically challenged adults and their families. All services are offered through separate programs which are located throughout Long Island and New York City. MTI operates 292 beds (251 supported beds and 41 transitional housing beds), of which 175 units are located throughout Nassau and Suffolk counties. In addition, MTI Residential Services, Inc. has a CR-SRO license from NYS Office of Mental Health pending for a 45-unit facility located in Staten Island and is in the process of developing a sixty-two (62) supported housing facility in Brooklyn, New York. .

MTI Supported Housing Initiatives provide safe, affordable, clean permanent housing for dually diagnosed, formerly homeless consumers. MTI provides the following supportive services: on-call 24-hour supervision seven (7) days a week and comprehensive case management. When appropriate, MTI also provides medication monitoring services, individual and group substance abuse counseling, community life skills, vocational rehabilitation, paid work training and employment training. Through supportive services tenant members foster self-sufficiency and attain insight of their psychiatric/ substance abuse challenges with an objective to maintain their permanent housing status.

Since its inception, MTI has operated all of its business based on strong guiding principles that encourages the importance in creating and maintaining partnerships with all stakeholders in the community. MTI and its staff have received recognition for its exemplary service in the mental health community. In April 2005, MTI received the YIMBY (Yes in My Backyard) Award from the Nassau County Executive, Thomas Suozzi for its exemplary programs throughout Nassau County. Furthermore, the New York City Chapter of The National Association of Social Workers awarded Wendell Knight, CEO, the 2005 "Image Award" for his contributions to mental health communities in New York.
